Not the most impressive of what the trail offers, but it’s such a short distance from Skógafoss that it’s worth the walk to give you a taste of the beauty and serenity of the landscape. Hestavaðsfoss is just 200 meters above Skógafoss, the first waterfall on the Waterfall Trail. Even though hiking until the bridge was magical (and one of our favorite hikes on our Iceland road trip!), we’ll do Fimmvörðuháls if we ever return to Iceland in the summer. We didn’t do this trail, and we regret it so much. It can be completed as a day hike (8-10 hours), but only one way, and you need to organize your transport back to the trailhead. With that said, it’s not a leisure stroll, you better have proper hiking boots, enough food and drinks, and rain gear. There are a few sections where the narrow path gets close to the canyon. Then it’s a steadily descending trail on your way back. It steadily ascends, but it’s not too steep, you just feel you hike uphill. Also count in some distant views of Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers.

Why exactly is this trail so beautiful?ĭon’t let the fact that we don’t know the name of most of the waterfalls mislead you. It’s absolutely stunning from the first step until you reach the bridge to cross Skógá river, so it’s worth it even if you can’t hike all the way. This trail is about 8 kilometers one-way, but since you return on the same path, you can turn around at any point. That’s what you could do if you’re short on time. If you keep on hiking though, most people will disappear as they usually turn back after a few kilometers. The upper viewpoint of Skógafoss is quite busy, and many people follow the river upstream for a little while. It’s an enchanted trail, and the further you get away from Skógafoss, the more it feels like it’s only yours. So this hiking trail has 26 waterfalls, and you pass them one by one as you hike upstream along Skógá river. But it’s worth climbing the metal stairs for the upper viewpoint, and it’s also where the Waterfall Way starts. The bottom viewpoint is easier to get to, and it gives the best close, frontal view of Skógafoss. And it’s only a few minutes walk away from the parking lot which is just off the Ring Road – a fact that makes any pretty Icelandic waterfall busy. It usually produces a rainbow on sunny days.
It’s big (60 meters high, 25 meters wide) and powerful, it has a symmetric shape and fairy tale surroundings.
